About United Kingdom
Around sixteen of the world's top hundred universities sit in one small country, so travel between campuses and cities is cheap and quick. Bangladeshi communities are well established in London, Birmingham and Manchester, which makes the first month far easier than arriving somewhere with no network. Students on taught master's courses can no longer bring dependants, so plan to travel alone unless you are starting a research degree.

The education system
- Bachelor's: 3 years, 4 in Scotland
- Master's: 1 year taught, 2 with placement
- Grading: First, 2:1, 2:2, Third
The one-year master's is the main draw. It is intense rather than short, and the dissertation runs through the summer when most students think they have finished.

London runs roughly 35% higher across every line. For the visa you must show £1,136 a month for up to nine months, or £1,483 in London, on top of unpaid tuition, and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year is paid upfront with the application.
Working part time

20 hours a week
During holidays
Full time
Typical pay
£12.71 an hour for 21 and over
What students usually do
- Retail and supermarkets
- Campus jobs
- Hospitality
- Warehouse shifts
The 20 hour limit is enforced strictly and breaching it is a visa curtailment, not a warning. Keep every payslip.
Plan your budget as though you will earn nothing in the first two months. Finding a job takes longer than anyone expects, and a visa officer will not accept part-time income as proof of funds either.
Applying to United Kingdom
When to start
Work backwards from the intake month. Applications close roughly three months before, and the visa takes another six to twelve weeks after that. For a September intake, the sensible starting point is about six months earlier.
Intakes: September, January
