About United States
The largest choice of programmes anywhere, and the widest spread in cost. A state university in the midwest and a private university on the coast can differ by four times for the same degree. Since 2025, student visa applicants are also asked to set their social media profiles to public for vetting, so what you have posted now matters alongside what you say at the interview window.

Assistantships and tuition waivers are the real funding route at master's level, not scholarships. Email the department, not the admissions office.

What our students study here
What living there actually costs
- Accommodation
- $600 to 1,500
- Food and groceries
- $300 to 500
- Transport
- $80 to 200
- Health insurance, misc
- $200 to 400
Typical monthly total
$1,200 to $2,600 a month
Health insurance is compulsory, billed by the university and often non-negotiable even if you hold other cover. Before you fly, budget for the $350 SEVIS fee and the $185 visa application fee as well.
Working part time
During term
20 hours a week, on campus only
During holidays
Full time on campus
Typical pay
$12 to $18 an hour
What students usually do
- Library and lab assistant
- Teaching assistant
- Campus dining
- Research roles
Off-campus work in year one is not permitted. CPT and OPT open later and both need authorisation before you start.
Plan your budget as though you will earn nothing in the first two months. Finding a job takes longer than anyone expects, and a visa officer will not accept part-time income as proof of funds either.
Applying to United States
When to start
Work backwards from the intake month. Applications close roughly three months before, and the visa takes another six to twelve weeks after that. For a August intake, the sensible starting point is about six months earlier.
Intakes: August, January
